Siem Reap: Designed to test the technical skill and mental mettle of top amateurs, Angkor Golf Resort has announced the launch of the Faldo Tee Challenge.
To be held from June 2-4, the event will see players teeing-off from the Black tees at the award-winning Faldo Design layout that is a Golf Course Facility Member of the Asian Golf Industry Federation.
Measuring 7,279 yards, the course that stages the Ladies European Tour’s Asian Qualifier and Faldo Series Asia Cambodia Championship is certain to provide a stern test to participating amateurs, who must have a recognised handicap of nine or below.
In addition to the Amateur Division, there will be a separate category for club professionals and teaching professionals.
The 36-hole stroke play tournament is the latest addition to the Cambodian club’s calendar of international events which includes the Angkor Four Ball Championship (April 7-9) and the Angkor Amateur Open (August 4-6), which will celebrate its ninth edition this year.
Alan Martin, Head Professional at Angkor Golf Resort, said: “We are continuously working to create a desirable calendar of events for both the local players and our international guests.
“This new event, from the Faldo Tees, presents a unique challenge to the players. A score of around par could be good enough to win.”
Martin said professionals would be welcome to take part in their own category. “They are invited to join the event in an informal competition environment that will provide a great networking opportunity for professionals from around the region,” he said.
Of the course that he sculpted, Sir Nick Faldo said: “Our fairways are typically generous, but our bunkering style is impressively bold. The greens have plenty of subtle undulations and they reward and encourage a variety of approach shots.”
